How to Upload a Large SQL File by Compressing It to ZIP
If you’re migrating a website or restoring a database, you may encounter an error when trying to upload a large SQL file through phpMyAdmin or your database manager. Most web hosts, including HostWatt, have upload size limits, so large files can’t be imported directly.
The easiest solution is to compress your SQL file into a ZIP archive, which phpMyAdmin can handle without exceeding server limits.
This guide walks you step by step.
Step 1: Prepare Your SQL File
-
Export your database from your previous host or local environment.
-
Make sure the SQL file is complete and working.
-
Place the SQL file in a folder on your computer for easy access.
Step 2: Compress Your SQL File into a ZIP Archive
-
Locate your SQL file on your computer.
-
Right-click the file and select “Compress” or “Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder” (Windows) or “Compress” on Mac.
-
A
.zipfile will be created. For example:mydatabase.sql → mydatabase.zip -
Make sure the ZIP file contains only the SQL file (no extra folders or files).
???? Tip: Compressing reduces file size and often helps you stay under the HostWatt upload limit.
Step 3: Upload the ZIP File via phpMyAdmin
-
Log in to your HostWatt cPanel account.
-
Open phpMyAdmin under the “Databases” section.
-
Select the database where you want to import the SQL file.
-
Click the Import tab.
-
Under File to Import, click Choose File and select your
.zipfile. -
Make sure the Format is set to SQL.
-
Click Go to start the import.
phpMyAdmin automatically extracts the SQL file from the ZIP and imports it into your database.
Step 4: Verify the Import
-
After the import finishes, phpMyAdmin will show a success message.
-
Check the tables in your database to confirm all data has been imported correctly.
-
Test your website to ensure everything is functioning.
Why This Method Works
Compressing SQL files to ZIP reduces the file size, making uploads faster and preventing “file too large” errors. It’s the recommended method for large database imports on shared hosting plans, and it works seamlessly on HostWatt hosting accounts.
